Germany’s Medical Technology Industry Still No. 1 in Europe

24.06.2019 – In 2015, EUR 32.39 billion was generated with medical devices in Germany. Thus Germany’s Medical Technology is clearly No. 1 with 34% of the total European sales of EUR 95 billion.

In Ireland 11.62 billion was spent on medical technology, as there are many European subsidiaries. France remained No. 3 with EUR 11.02 billion and also Italy ranked No. 4 (EUR 9.51 billion) as well as the UK No. 5 (EUR 8.15 billion). Spain as No. 5. of the G5 Countries was only No. 9 with EUR 2.01 billion, surpassed by Switzerland (EUR 4.22 billion) and the Scandinavian countries.

Germany No. 2 worldwide

The world market for medical technology in 2018 amounted to USD 390 billion. Germany’s medical technology industry, with approx. 10%, was considered the second largest source of sales after the USA, which accounted for the largest share with 39% of the world market volume. Japan followed with 9%.

Among the emerging countries, China leads with a share of 8% of the world market for medical technology, far ahead of Russia (2.1%), India (1.2%) and Brazil (1.1%). The rest of the world had a share of about 20%.

Orthopedic products strongest area of medical technolgoy

Strongest areas of medical technology on the world market in 2018 were orthopedic products (13.2%), minimally invasive medicine (11.6%), cardiology products (9.5%), ophthalmology (8.5%), wound care (5.7%) and patient monitoring (5.5%). Underrepresented were stil Robotic assistance systems and aesthetic medicine were still underrepresented (approx. 2% each).

Bei den Schwellenländern führt China mit einem Anteil von 8% am Weltmarkt für Medizintechnik mit großem Abstand gegenüber Russland (2,1%), Indien (1,2%) und Brasilien (1,1 %). Der Rest der Welt hatte einen Anteil von ca. 20%.

Orthopädische Produkte stärkster Bereich der Medizintechnik

Die stärksten Bereiche der Medizintechnik auf dem Weltmarkt waren in 2018 Produkte der Orthopädie (13,2%), minimal-invasive Medizin (11,6%), Produkte der Kardiologie (9,5%), der Ophthalmologie (8,5%), Wundversorgung (5,7%) und der Patientenüberwachung (5,5%). Noch unterrepräsentiert waren Robotische Assistenzsysteme und Ästhetische Medizin (jeweils ca. 2%).
